From the rugged beauty of Patagonia to the breathtaking heights of the Andes, the landscapes of South America are as diverse as its people. Each country boasts its own unique traditions, cuisines, and landscapes, creating a tapestry of cultures that is both rich and vibrant. Whether exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, savoring the flavors of Brazilian cuisine in Rio de Janeiro, or trekking through the dense jungles of the Amazon, South America offers a kaleidoscope of experiences that captivate the senses and leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

Ecuador
My very first country in South America, and what an unforgettable experience it was. It marked the beginning of a series of trips where I embraced a more spontaneous approach—I booked only a couple of nights in a hotel and decided to go with the flow, allowing myself the freedom to explore as I pleased, when I pleased. This decision turned out to be serendipitous because, on the first day of our arrival in Guayaquil, everything seemed fine. My friend and I spent the day exploring, eagerly planning the rest of our time in Ecuador. However, by the next morning, everything had changed. The president declared a state of emergency for the entire country due to protests over rising gasoline prices. Roads were blocked with debris, and locals expressed their frustration with blockades. It was a challenging situation that impacted our ability to move around, yet despite the obstacles, I had an amazing time. I experienced a wealth of tourist attractions and explored different cities with the help of knowledgeable locals. And let's not forget the food—Ecuadorian shrimp remains, hands down, the best I've ever tasted. Fresh and flavorful, it left a lasting impression. It was fascinating to discover that Ecuador uses the USD as its national currency, adding another layer of intrigue to my travels. While I look forward to returning during less politically tumultuous times, my first experience in Ecuador was nothing short of extraordinary, and I can't wait to explore more of this beautiful country.

Columbia
I absolutely adored Colombia, and it's a true shame I haven't returned yet. My visit to Cartagena during the pandemic was an absolute delight. We indulged in delicious food, sampled local drinks, danced the night away, and soaked up the sun on the beautiful beaches. But what truly captured my heart about Colombia is the vibrant celebration of blackness in its people and culture. While Latin America is known for its diversity, many Latin countries don't always celebrate or appreciate blackness in the same way I'm accustomed to. In Colombia, however, it was a beautiful and eye-opening experience to connect with Afro-Colombians who were proud of their heritage and background. The conversations we shared were meaningful, and it was inspiring to see the impact of Afro-Colombian culture on the country as a whole. I'm eagerly looking forward to returning, immersing myself even more in Afro-Colombian culture, and learning about their profound influence on Colombian society.
